The Tortoise is known well as a symbol of patience, this is partly because of the Aesop's fable The Hare & The Tortoise in which they race each other and the tortoise wins. This is were the saying slow and steady wins the race comes from, In other words those who are patient are rewarded. Rushing leads to failure.
This is why to me the tortoise personifies the virtue Patience well.
